Redsn0w is Released – Supports 3.0

$10 for an update on my iPod?  And it won’t be jailbroken afterward?  Screw that Apple, I’m not going in for your corporate nonsense.

I have a better idea.

So, my iPod is alive and well, with OS 3.0, and it is fully jailbroken.  Yes, my iPod touch second generation.  So sexy.

How did I do it?  Well, I’m glad you asked, because I’m willing to share how I did it.

The first step is to go to the shady parts of the internet, and Download the 3.0 firmware for the iPod touch.   I don’t care how you get it, but you must get the proper one.  There is different firmware for the different devices, so make sure you get the proper firmware.  That is all I will say on the matter.

The next step, after downloading it, is to restore your iPod in iTunes.  This will erase everything on it. You must back everything up first, and then proceed with this step.  It may be hard, but you have no other choice.

Open iTunes with your iPod plugged in.  Hold down “Shift” and hit “Restore.”  This will bring up a browsing field.  Find your downloaded 3.0 firmware.  Allow iTunes to do its thing with your iPod.

After iTunes is done touching your iPod, you have to set it up again.  Do so, and you will have a fully 3.0 iPod touch!

But that really is no fun.  I mean, not nearly as fun as having a jailbroken iPod touch.  So let’s do that too.  This means you need to download RedSn0w for the iPod touch second generation:  It is the only package that can jailbreak the Second Generation iPod Touch with 3.0 Firmware. Luckily, it is easy to get, and free!

Go to the iPhone Dev official site, read the blog post, and Download Redsn0w for your operating system.

Good.  Now follow the pictures.  It really isn’t that hard.  Open your Redsn0w file.RedsnowAnd then browse for the firmware.  Make sure it is the same one you used in your iTunes restore.  This assures that things will go smoothly.

RedsnowAfter finding it, Redsn0w should think a little bit, and then determine that the IPSW was identified, and you can go according to plan.

Make sure you install Cydia.  That will be an option in one of the screens.  It is installed by default, so just keep going.  The screen below is the hardest part.  Make sure your iPod is off before doing it.  The instructions guide you through it.  My advice, is to simply read the instructions first, and then hit the back button, and actually do them.  When I did that, it worked the first time.

Once your iPod is recognized in DFU mode, things move quick.  Redsn0w puts a bunch of files on your iPod and proceeds to jailbreak it.  Just wait and be patient… and soon you too will have a jailbroken iPod touch second gen.ConfirmationCydia
